Smokeys reputation as a sly mechanical genius as one of the premier mechanics in racing histroy hasn't diminished over the years. In 1947 Smokey Yunick opened The Best Damn Garage In Town" in Daytona Beach, Florida. In this garage he would engineer and develop race cars and parts that would shape not only the racing world but also have signifigant impact on the production cars people would drive for years to come. In the early years, Yunick built and campaigned Chevrolets. In 1957, for the race at the Daytona Beach and Road Course, he put veteran racer Paul Goldsmith behind the wheel of his ˜57 Chevy. Between Smokeys tweaks to the car and Goldsmiths driving, the car charged to the front of the pack. Unfortunately a piston would burn out late in the race and cost them the win. In the years to follow, Yunick's cars would win four of the first eight major stock car races at Daytona International Speedway, starting in 1959. Yunick's ability as a mechanic not only produced winning cars and drivers, it helped bring innovation to reality. Stories about his "sleight of hand" in car preparation abound, but he maintained their telling over the years became a bit embellished. The fact remains, the man from "The Best Damn Garage In Town" knew racing. And he gave to it far more than he took.
